Confederate Paper Money
The Confederate States of America issued almost $2 billion worth of paper money between 1861 and 1865. Most of this took the form of Treasury notes, issued in ten different denominations which ranged from 50 cents to $1,000. These Treasury notes were spawned by seven different Issues, each of which was authorized by an Act of the Confederate Congress.
In total, almost 85 million individual notes were issued between 1861 and 1865, made up of seventy different types (designs). These seventy types of notes have been researched and documented in ever-increasing detail since the end of the Civil War by numismatic legends including Raphael Thian, H.D. Allen, William West Bradbeer, Dr, Philip Chase, Dr. Douglas Ball, Grover Criswell jr, and more recently, Pierre Fricke. Collectors today are blessed with the fruit of these labors.
Pierre Fricke's 2014 publication - "Collecting Confederate Paper Money" - is undoubtedly the most popular and comprehensive reference guide for collectors of Confederate Treasury notes. Fricke provides text and image-based descriptions of the seventy recognized types, and meticulously lists over nine hundred varieties (sub-types) which have been discovered and verified by numismatists over the years. Pierre has been a leading dealer in Confederate Paper Money during the last twenty-five years, and his book provides collectors with valuable insight into rarity and market values. An updated version of this book is anticipated in 2027. Pierre can be contacted using the email link shown.
