Confederate Treasury Notes

The Confederate Treasury issued almost $2 billion worth of Treasury Notes during its short life. This was manifested by almost 85 million individual notes, with denominations ranging from 50 cents to $1,000.

Seventy different types (designs) of notes, across ten different denominations, were issued by the Confederate Treasury between 1861 and 1865. These notes were spread across seven different Issues, each of which was approved by an Act of Congress.

These seventy types of notes have been documented in increasing detail over the last century by numismatic legends including H.D. Allen, William West Bradbeer, Dr, Philip Chase, Dr. Douglas Ball, Grover Criswell jr, and more recently, Pierre Fricke.

The culmination of all this research has greatly extended and animated the original documentary work undertaken by Raphael Thian. Collectors now have access to extensive information and graphic images of every type of Confederate note, and the many sub-varieties that have been discovered.

Pierre Fricke's publication, pictured to the right, is the current authoritative guide for collectors of the seventy types of Confederate Treasury notes, and the numerous varieties (sub-types) which have been discovered by numismatists over the years. For further information please contact Pierre.
